2019 Men's San Juan Island Knitting Retreat

This is Bald Hill Knits' first retreat for up to 8 men, hosted in my home, which looks south across Bald Hill to North Bay and Dinner Island and beyond to Griffin Bay and the south end of San Juan Island. The light is gorgeous, the air is fresh, and time glides past. Black tail deer have the run of the island, but we have no squirrels. The house is smoke and pet free.

Of course we’ll be knitting… in my home, on a nearby driftwood beach (weather permitting), and on the interisland ferry.

There won’t be a retreat-specific class or project, but here are some that can be finished in a few hours or days:
1898 Hat (link at bottom of page)
Turn a Square beanie
No-Purl Ribbed Scarf
Glittens (mittens with a forefinger)
Tell me your favorite quick projects to have them listed here as well.

While here, you're welcome to peruse my knitting books and magazines. These are listed in my Ravelry library. If you've been wanting to see a book I don't have, let me know and I may well add it.

The first day of the retreat is the Vernal Equinox—a great way to launch into spring—and the next day is a full moon. Temperatures for that week of March have average lows around 40 and highs in the low 50s.

And I have one or two pleasant surprises in store.

When

Wednesday, March 20, 2019 through Saturday March 23.

Where

40 Bald Hill Road, Friday Harbor, Washington

Cost

The retreat fee is $275. Register at mensknittingretreat.com

This time, attendees are responsible for travel to the island, lodging, and food (due largely to the timeframe and group size). A couple lodging options are the Discovery Inn ($89-$109 per night) and Friday Harbor Suites (higher rates, but includes breakfast and shuttle from ferry).

Getting here

On the mainland, you can take an Airporter Shuttle to the Anacortes ferry landing. Do make ferry reservations in advance, and be sure to check in at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time.

You can also fly directly to San Juan Island with Kenmore Air.

Friday Harbor and its outskirts are quite walkable. Discovery Inn to Bald Hill Road is a pleasant half hour walk. Friday Harbor Suites is 20 minutes away.
